If I could venture one observation about the past few weeks, it is that—like me—you have likely been following the United States and Israel’s military campaign against Iran and asking a pressing question: when will the turbulence emanating from Washington subside?
The attacks on Iran and Lebanon have not only violated Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter—which requires that “all members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state”—they have also exposed a more troubling question: what kind of statecraft is now being practiced in Washington? If recent actions are any guide, or we are to believe a disturbing report in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, the answer may be that of a reckless unilateral actor—namely, U.S. President Donald J. Trump who has surrounded himself with sycophants instead of competent advisors.
